Google is presumably breathing a sigh of
relief today as it appears that someone, at least, cares about its
Android Wear platform - as LG has become the first manufacturer to
announce new devices that will come with Android Wear 2.0 baked in.
The
LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style both run on Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear
2100 processors - though the former has 768MB of RAM versus just 512MB
on the Style version. The Sport has a higher resolution screen (480x480
vs 360*360) and even has built in 4G - so presumably the idea is that
you can leave your phone at home and go for a run wearing just your
watch. (Umm, and hopefully some clothes).
It’ll
be a welcome vote of confidence in Android Wear, which has struggled to
take off as a platform. Version 2 of the operating system has added
support for the Google Assistant, so you’ll be able to bark questions
and commands at your wrist rather than have to faff around with a
screen. Though if you do prefer touching the screen, both will also
support Google’s “Smart Reply” tech, which uses machine learning to
figure out what your handwriting actually says.
Pricing
and availability has yet to be announced, though LG says the pair will
be released in the US on February 10th, and “key European markets”,
which we optimistically assume still includes Brexit Britain, soon after
